Hackers behind SolarWinds are back targeting retail resellers and tech providers: Microsoft reports

Recently, popular tech giant Microsoft has made an announcement that hackers behind SolarWinds are back. Activities were detected from Nobelium, a famous actor in Russia. Back in 2002, SolarWinds customers were attacked by Russian hackers who were part of an intelligence group known as SVR. Nobelium had since then been attempting to remake the approach used by the hackers to target organizations crucial for the global IT supply chain. This time around, the entity is focused on attacking different parts of the supply chain like techs related to the retail functions and resellers. Microsoft is almost certain that the hackers are trying to ride the direct access wave that resellers generally use to reach downstream customers.

According to Microsoft, a new campaign surfaced around May 2021, and since then, notification was sent to more than 140 retail technology service providers and resellers who Nobelium targeted. Microsoft has stated that more than 14 of these service providers and resellers have been exposed to cyber-attack until now. Fortunately for the community, Microsoft had discovered the attack in the early stage so that the developments could be saved with other cloud resellers, customers, and tech providers. The tech giant has assured the community that it will continue to put efforts into sorting this issue soon.
